Embryologist from University of Bath has succeeded in developing embryo from mouse egg without fertilization with male sperms. It is the first time that they have succeeded in turning eggs into embryo without sperms, breaking the 200 years view that only sperms can turn eggs into embryo.
Dr. Tonny Perry said that it was a great achievement for us. But he added that after eggs turned into embryo, called parthenogenotes, it dies after few days. But if mouse sperms are injected into the embryo they turned into healthy babies.
Dr. Tonny said that this will take many more years before we will be able to creating babies without any help from male sperms. Though the embryo was created from eggs it may be possible in the future to create embryo from skin cells. This is a breakthrough because it will make it possible to make embryos from extinct species, such as dinosaurs.
It may also be helpful for those women who have lost their fertility to become mothers, but as Dr. Tonny said it is a long journey which may take many more years.
