National Highway Authority (NHA) is the responsible authority for collecting fines on motorway in Pakistan but Auditor General of Pakistan (AHP) have discovered irregularities of more than 2 billion Rupees.
According to the report which was submitted by AHP at parliament huge discrepancies have been discovered. AGP disclosed that for the last 19 years motorists have been fined for Rs. 19.704 billion but NHA received only Rs. 17.676. The remaining amount of Rs. 2.029 billion is missing for which no action has been taken.
This corruption is not unknown to the authorities because the discrepancy has been going on from 1997 when Motorway Police was established for highway safety. For 19 years no inquiry was done and no action was taken against those who were responsible. Auditor General raised questions that how this corruption was not noticed for such a long time?

In Pakistan the fines are imposed by National Highway & Motorway Police (NHMP) and collected by NHA. Auditor General have recommended that a comprehensive inquiry should be carried out jointly by both and then they should cooperate and work together to eliminate this corruption.
Motorway is considered to be far better and fairer than other government institutions, departments and projects where billions are lost because of corruption, irregularities and mismanagement.
