Just when we were getting used to not worrying about vaccination cards, it struck again. No, Not Covid; this time, it’s polio vaccination.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has recently implemented a new travel rule for passengers going abroad. All airlines must now check passengers’ polio vaccination cards before they can board their flights.
Passengers are strongly advised to make sure their polio vaccination cards are current before starting their international trips. Travelers must have valid polio cards while traveling abroad.
Why Is It Necessary for Pakistanis Flying Out Of Pakistan To Get Vaccinated For Polio?
1. International Travel Requirements: Many countries have strict health regulations, and some may require proof of polio vaccination before granting entry to travelers. Getting vaccinated ensures that Pakistani travelers can meet these international travel requirements.
2. Preventing the Spread of Polio: Polio is a highly contagious disease, and unvaccinated individuals can become carriers and spread it to other countries where the disease has been eradicated or is under control.
3. National and International Reputation: Ensuring that all Pakistani travelers are vaccinated for polio enhances the country’s reputation in the international community. It shows a commitment to public health and responsible global citizenship.
4. Personal Safety: Polio can lead to severe complications, including paralysis and death. Vaccinating Pakistani travelers safeguard their health and reduce the risk of contracting polio during their journey.
5. Community Protection: Vaccinating travelers helps protect vulnerable populations, such as children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems, who may not be able to receive the vaccine.
6. Supporting Polio Eradication Efforts: Pakistan has been actively involved in global polio eradication initiatives. Ensuring outbound travelers are vaccinated supports the country’s efforts to eradicate polio domestically and worldwide.
7. Public Health Preparedness: Requiring polio vaccination for outbound travelers demonstrates a proactive approach by the Pakistani authorities to protecting public health and preparing for potential disease outbreaks.
8. Compliance with WHO Recommendations: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends polio vaccination for travelers from polio-endemic countries like Pakistan to minimize the risk of international spread.
UPDATE (August 8, 2023):
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) clarified today that they haven’t imposed any requirement on the outbound passengers to show a polio vaccination card or certificate to travel. The whole incident happened due to confusion over an internal memo.
