Ultra-Fast EV Charging Stations Likely at Motorway Rest Areas Soon
The federal government is working on an ambitious target of installing 40 Level 3 fast-charging stations along all motorways and the National Highways at an average 120 km intervals.
A document shared with ProPakistani revealed that the federal government proposes 1,050 Level 3 fast-charging stations designed to recharge vehicles within roughly 40 minutes to around 1 hour, 750 Level 2 chargers for medium-duration charging, 600 Level 1 chargers suited for overnight use, and 600 battery-swap stations offering near-instant energy replacement.
Around 40 fast-charging stations are planned along motorways and the N-5 highway at intervals of approximately 120 kilometers, enabling long-distance EV travel and reducing range anxiety for future electric vehicle owners.
The government will provide Rs. 2,250 million in viability gap funding through a public-private partnership model to support charging stations in locations where private investment alone may not be commercially feasible.
The government also plans to install 3,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide by 2030. This is an old proposal and ProPakistani reported it first a few months ago.
The policy also brings oil marketing companies into the transition. At least 10 percent of fuel stations operated by each company in every province will be required to install Level 3 fast chargers to integrate EV infrastructure into Pakistan’s existing refueling network.
If approved, implementation will begin in phases, with the first rollout expected within six months. To make commercial operations viable, the Power Division has set EV charging tariffs at Rs. 39.7 per kilowatt-hour.
The initiative could build the backbone infrastructure needed to support the government’s goal of increasing electric vehicle adoption across Pakistan over the next decade.
