In the north-western part of Karachi, Sindh is located the Orangi Town of Karachi, which has the New Karachi Town at its north, Gulberg Town to the east across the Gujjar Nala stream, Liaquatabad town at its south and SITE town at its west. Officially the town has been divided into 13 neighbourhoods, each with its own council. The councils have worked in the interest of the people to develop the sewer system that had troubled the people of Orangi for many years.
The Orangi town has people belonging to the lower class. there are some middle class population as well. Some housing schemes have been developed in this region also. Most of the people are from the low income class category. With respect to ethnicity, a wide range of people may be found here such as, Muhajirs, Punjabis, Sindhis, kashmiris, Seraikis, Pakhtuns, Balochis, Memons, Bohras, Ismailis, etc.
Among the famous landmarks in Orangi Town is the Football Chowrangi, which has a special significance. This area has suffered from the impacts of city’s political situation. In case of strikes or other violent activities in the city, the areas around the chowrangi are immediately closed.
