Food Department Punjab is responsible for acquiring wheat and supplying it to flour mills at subsidized prices. To control the acquiring and supply of wheat the department recruits employees creating new jobs in the province.
The recruitment process of Food Department of Punjab is based on departmental committees and Punjab Public Service Commission. Employees till BS-7 are selected through open advertisement in newspapers after which candidates are shortlisted through written tests and interviews.
Staff above BS-7 is recruited through PPSC which is the centralized government agency responsible for selecting and recommending suitable candidates for government departments.
Tests and interview of Punjab Public Service Commission are held in February of each year for which interested candidates are required to submit their application forms in December. Tests are held only once a year in which candidates are selected for multiple department of provincial government.

Food Department Punjab also aims to make sure that safe, secure and healthy food is provided to the consumer. The aims of food department includes that food is nutritionally adequate & easily available in required quantity.
The department also stabilizes the wheat market by storing it in reserves when it is in excess and releasing it for market and export when it is required. Subsidy is also provided to mills so that flour rate is accessible and acceptable for whole population.
Anti-Adulteration campaign is also managed by the department for which a new team was established which provides training to each districts to stop adulteration in food items.
