Gas theft is a serious issue plaguing many regions, and recent events in Karachi have highlighted its magnitude.
The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) uncovered a significant gas theft operation in Gul Hasan Town near Sabzi Mandi. Coordinated efforts by SSGC’s Central Revenue Department (CRD) and Central Gas Testing Organization (CGTO) led to the discovery of this illegal network.
Illegal Connections Discovered
The investigation revealed that over 2,500 houses were receiving gas through unauthorized connections directly tapped into the service line. These illegal connections were promptly disconnected by the SSGC team, effectively halting the operation.
Staggering Theft Volume
According to SSGC’s estimates, the gas thieves were siphoning off a staggering 2,400,000 cubic meters of gas annually, valued at approximately Rs 75,000,000. This highlights the significant economic impact of gas theft on both the company and the nation as a whole.
Zero-Tolerance Policy
SSGC reiterated its commitment to combatting gas theft, emphasizing the vital role of gas as a national resource.
The company maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards theft and has pledged to enhance its efforts in cracking down on such activities. This includes imposing fines proportional to the volume of stolen gas.
National Concern
Gas theft isn’t limited to Karachi; it’s a nationwide issue. Earlier this month, the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) dismantled an illegal pipeline in the Lower Dir district, disconnecting 440 unauthorized connections.
This illegal pipeline supplied gas to several villages, resulting in the theft of 36 million cubic feet of gas.
The discovery of large-scale gas theft operations underscores the need for vigilant monitoring and enforcement measures. Utility companies and authorities must work collaboratively to curb such illegal activities, safeguarding vital resources and ensuring fair distribution.
By cracking down on gas theft, we protect not only the interests of utility companies but also the welfare of the nation as a whole.
