ISLAMABAD: The chairman of Senate Raza Rabbani has said that legislation against army’s takeover is ineffective. On the occasion of world democracy day, he said while ending the discussion that he believes article 6 has been ineffective. He added that in my eyes, there is no law of the constitution of Pakistan that could protect democracy. He further said that only the public can protect democracy that is given powers of system.
The senators of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) alleged that contacts between army and civil leadership have been finished and both are not on the same page. But, the senator of Muslim League (N) Iqbal Zafar Jhagra claimed that there in threat to democracy by civil military relationship.
Iqbal Jhagra said that there can be some shortcomings in democratic set-up in the country but the good thing is that the system is working. He said there is no need to worry as democracy today can face any kind of challenges and an exemplary democracy will be established in the country in future.
The senators during the discussion, despite positive talks, unanimously agreed that this is the duty of political parties to stop army from ruling and takeover and it is essential for the nation to be united in this regard.
