Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri is a Pakistani politician who re-entered into the political scene of Pakistan with a bang. He was able to gather some followers for the long march and has become a threat to the other political leaders through his growing popularity. Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri is also a former law professor and an Islamic scholar of Sufism. He has taught at the University of Punjab as a professor of international constitutional law. He is also a founding member of Minhaj-ul-Quran international. He also formed a political party Pakistan Awami Tehreek in 1989 to introduce democracy and assist economic stability. The party also fought for human rights and justice and for the women’s position in Pakistan.
He was also elected as a Member of the National Assembly for his constituency. On 29 November 2004, Qadri announced his resignation as a Member of the National Assembly. He initiated a political campaign to support a democratic revolution through electoral reforms. He called a million men march in Islamabad to protest against the corruption in the government. According to the government, only 25,000 people participated in the long march. A recent public gathering at Qadri’s residence at Lahore culminated into a deadly incident, leading to loss of lives at the rally.
