Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani of the Pakistan Supreme Court has ordered that medical students should be posted in deprived areas like Thar for at least six months. Those who do not comply should not be awarded degrees. This was said during a hearing of the Thar drought case by a 3 member bench led by the Chief Justice in Karachi.
At the hearing, the Chief Secretary Sindh confessed in court that doctors do not want to work in places farther than Karachi and Hyderabad. The DG Health had been suspended and investigation was being carried out against him. Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jillani urged the Chief Secretary to work in an unbiased way to serve the nation which was his duty.
The Secretary Health of Sindh was also present to give his report in which he said that the problem would not be solved until doctors didn’t start giving duties in their own districts. On hearing this Chief Justice Tasadduq Hussain remarked that doctors should be posted on duties in their local districts compulsorily for 3 years.
The hearing was held after the Supreme Court took special notice of the drought in Thar and the subsequent deaths of dozens of children which raised many questions about the competency of the health care agencies of Sindh.
