An announcement was made confirming that Karachi University would remain closed on the 18th ,19th and 20th of September following the tragic news of the death of professor Dr Hafiz Mohammad Shakeel Auj who was a professor at the university and the dean of Islamic Studies.
Professor Dr Shakeel Auj had been a part of the university for 19 years and was well respected among his fellow peers and students. He was tragically shot and killed on Thursday September 18 while on his way to an event organized by the Iranian Consulate with his colleague Dr Tahir Masood.
Dr Shakeel’s car was fired upon by unknown attackers on motorcycles and he was hit three times. His colleague fortunately remained safe during the incident and rushed him to the hospital but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Dr Shakeel was attacked in the area of Gulshan e Iqbal near the Bait Ul Mukarram masjid which is a busy area of Karachi.
The incident had been taken very seriously by the governor of Sindh who ordered inspector general of Sindh Police Ghulam Hyder Jamali to submit a report on the incident. Dr Shakeel’s funeral was held later at Karachi University
