Between 2019 and 2021, Karachi experienced 388 electrocution cases, as revealed by Mehfooz Pakistan. Of these cases, 70% took place inside homes and private properties. Surprised, aren’t you?
The improper use of water pumps and generators in hazardous conditions, such as placing them in waterlogged areas or carelessly positioning them in uncovered spaces during the rainy season, is the primary cause of these incidents.
Unfortunately, these seemingly harmless appliances tragically claimed the lives of 40 individuals. Another significant factor contributing to these deaths is faulty wiring and unapproved electrical work performed by unqualified individuals within households.
The monsoon season makes the situation even more dangerous. The streets are flooded with water, and potholes transform the surroundings into a hazardous setting, causing an astonishing 50% of electrocution incidents during these months.
This issue has persisted due to the inadequate infrastructure in Pakistan. Despite the predictable rainfalls each year between July and September, the essential measures to guarantee people’s safety are seriously lacking.
Reports indicate that utility infrastructure is responsible for less than 7% of these incidents, frequently connected to power theft and encroachment.
87% of the documented instances involve males aged 21 to 30. Given the ongoing electrocution cases across various areas of Karachi, there’s an urgency to establish stringent regulations and enhance public awareness of this issue.
Tips to Avoid Electrocution Incidents
1. Ensure all electrical outlets and cords are in good condition.
2. Use high-quality surge protectors to guard against power surges.
3. Keep electrical appliances away from water and wet surfaces.
4. Regularly inspect and replace damaged cords to prevent fraying.
5. Install ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) in bathrooms and kitchens.
6. Avoid overloading outlets with multiple devices.
7. Teach children about electrical safety and keeping fingers away from sockets.
8. Turn off and unplug appliances when not in use.
9. Keep a safe distance from power lines outdoors.
10. Only allow certified electricians with personal protective equipment to manage internal and external wiring.
