In a significant move towards enhancing public transportation and reducing air pollution, the Sindh government has unveiled plans to introduce nearly 200 electric buses to the feeder routes of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system.
This initiative is set to transform the commuting experience for thousands of residents in the region while contributing to environmental sustainability. The funding for this ambitious project comes from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
A Sustainable Solution to Air Pollution
During a meeting between the Principal Director of ADB, F. Cleo Kawawaki, and Caretaker CM Sindh, Justice Retired Maqbool Baqar, the induction of electric buses took center stage.
The caretaker CM emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing air pollution by incorporating electric buses into the public transport network. This decision is expected to impact the lives of around 50,000 daily commuters positively.
Expanding Public Transport Initiatives
The ADB delegation was also briefed on the broader public transport initiatives undertaken by the Sindh government, which have been instrumental in improving the daily lives of numerous citizens.
By introducing additional electric buses to the BRT system, the government aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the public transport network, making it more accessible and eco-friendly.
Enhancing Existing BRT Routes
The Secretary of Transport revealed that a substantial fleet of 170-180 electric buses would be integrated into the existing BRT routes, including the Green and Orange Lines.
Additionally, the government plans to harness solar power to partially generate electricity, which can lead to reduced operating costs and a more environmentally responsible transportation system.
The Sindh government’s decision to introduce nearly 200 electric buses into the feeder routes of the BRT is a commendable step towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable public transport network.
By partnering with the Asian Development Bank, the government aims to improve the daily commute for thousands of residents while addressing the pressing issue of air pollution. This initiative sets an example for environmentally responsible transportation solutions and showcases the commitment to a greener future.
