A.R. Rahman is the most famous Indian composer, song writer, musician and philanthropist. He is a Sufi Muslim but very few people know that he was born in a Hindu family.
When asked why he accepted Islam? He said the journey started after his father died when he was young. The sudden death created many physiological and financial problems for them, during these hard times he met a Sufi saint which introduced him to Islam. In the teachings of Islam he and his family found peace.
In 1989 A.R Rahman at the age of 23 accepted Islam along with other members of his family. Before accepting Islam his name was A.S Dileep Kumar but the Sufi changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman or A.R Rahman.
During an interview A.R Rahman said that Islam is an ocean and I have chosen the Sufi method of Islam, that’s what I practice and that’s reflected in my actions.
He has received many national & international awards such as Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, BAFTA Awards, National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards and Padma Bhushan Award.
