New Delhi: An official report released by the women rights activists stated that every hour a woman dies owing to the dowry issue that has become a casual crime in India. A figure of 8,233 touched last year as the women fell prey to the societal growing culture, strengthening its roots and taking form of menace. The Indian law does not allow the taking or giving of dowry but still the practice is common in the country. However, statistics have showed up 32% decrease in last week’s National Crime Bureau records.
Ranjana Kumari, women rights activist said that the slow prosecution methods, deteriorated laws have contributed to the crime. The more a family rich is, the more it is expected to be good in terms of dowry giving.
It is witnessed that annually many women are tortured mentally and physically by their in-laws and husbands if the dowry ‘demand’ is not met or they feel inadequate. Sometimes the disputes continue even after several years of marriages.
The social worker opined that the economic boom has ‘commercialized’ wedding where the young generation look forward to meeting their wants through their in-laws and unfortunately it seems to be a persistent, common practice.
‘It has become common to all the classes of people in the society, even rich people do not decline to accept dowry, said Suman Nalwa, a police officer dealing with women related crimes.
