Karachi: International Press Freedom Day on the theme of “New Voices: Media Freedom Helping to Transform Societies” is being observed all around the world with an aim to prevail truth and justice in the society as well as the promotion of social awareness among the masses.
According to the reports, the killing ratio of Journalists has been increased to 16% all over the world with Pakistan topping the list with 10 journalists killed the previous year. The freedom of Press has now been limited to conferences only, because in reality the journalist who seeks to promote truth has to face unabated trouble in the society which at times leads to death.
Pakistan for the second successive year has been ranked at the top in the list of ‘most number of journalist murdered in a country’. Journalists like Saleem Shehzad, Wali Babar and as many as 10 journalists lay their lives in Pakistan while discharging their professional duties.
Iraq takes the second spot with the death of 7 journalists in the country followed with Libya and Mexico where 5 journalist facing death during the year 2011. Meanwhile, In India and Iran, 2 journalists were killed throughout the year.
Eynulla Fatullayev, an Azerbaijani journalist and human rights activist, has been named the winner of the 2012 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize by UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova. He was nominated for the award by an Independent, International jury.
