The village of Fatu Dedo is an example of the fact that if the people unite for a cause then they can create a system that is not dependent upon the government assistance. The Fatu Dedo village in the Badin district now has exceptionally clean streets and its residents are healthy and free of the falling prey to vicious diseases such as, Cholera, typhoid and diarrhea.
The residents have created village based organizations in each mohalla that will attend a meeting held every fortnight to discuss the matters of the village. A fine of Rs 10 is imposed on anyone littering the streets or defecating in the open. The fine will increase by manifolds, if the violator refuses to pay the fine and he/she will be socially boycotted by the villagers by banning them from any social event or community programmers. The community has itself constructed the underground sanitation system, while young volunteers patrol the streets and catch anyone violating the rules set by the village community.
[junkie-alert style=”white”] The rural areas of Pakistan have been constantly failed to fulfil their vows leaving the people in these areas in abysmal conditions, the village of Fatu Dedo started its own campaign after losing hope in the Pakistan People’s Party [/junkie-alert]
The village of Fatu Dedo has started from a scratch to rebuild their village after losing hope from the Pakistan People’s Party. They are now convinced that their village can only survive with their own efforts. Yusuf Dedo was the only person in the village to have completed his intermediate education and only one girl in the village has done her matriculation. The village has been supported by the NSRP (National Rural Support Programme) which built latrine and donated a portable water filtration system. This has also encouraged the people to send their children to school, with the enrolment of students increasing from 50 to 100.
