In Pakistan dowry (jahaiz) from bride has become a norm, and in many cases the groom demands house, car and other financial gifts from the family of the girl. This is an unislamic custom and should be rejected.
Similar question was raised to Sheikh Saalih, a man asked him that I am getting married and we are expecting to receive a house from the family of the girl. Sheikh answered that demanding dowry or any financial help from female is unislamic and is not allowed.
If the family gifts anything to their son-in-law then it is permissible. But if you think that they are burdening their selves to meet the requirements and demands of the society then the groom should make it clear to the family that it’s not necessary.
In our society the family of the bride takes loans and sells their property just to meet the custom of their area or tribe.
