The prices of onion are also rising after tomatoes in the provincial capital Lahore indicating the failure of provincial government and the city administration. Currently onions are being sold at Rs. 100/kg and it is expected that the price will increase further.
The hike in prices of vegetables is not an exclusive matter in Lahore rather other cities are also facing the same situation, especially Karachi where tomatoes become a luxury in the past few weeks. Even still Tomatoes are being sold at Rs. 120/kg while prices of onion has increased to Rs. 80 – Rs. 100.
The national production of onion in Pakistan is 1.7 million tones which is enough to fulfill the national requirement but due to poor coordination between the provinces shortage occur in different cities & provinces.
The increase in prices in short period of time indicates failure of different state departments. Citizens were also angry at the government failure to control the prices of these basic food ingredients saying that a common man cannot bear these costs.
