Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan has said Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) will be fully empowered for the promotion of media in the country.
In a meeting with the cable operators in Karachi here on Saturday, she said cable operators are playing an important role in the development of electronic media and the PEMRA should facilitate and address the problems faced by them.
She said there are 2800 registered cable operators in the country and a consultation process has been started to resolve their issues. Representatives of cable operators apprised the information minister about the problems faced by the industry.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan has held a meeting with the Cable Operators Association. PEMRA Chief was also present on the occasion. The Minister said security of cable operators is a big challenge and the government is fully aware of protecting their life and propert. She said cable operators are playing a vital role in the development of electronic media and they are also the back bone of TV channels.
She said this field has become an industry which has provided livelihood to so many people. Cable operators affected by the floods will be compensated and no fee will be taken from them. She urged PEMRA to provide necessary facilities to this industry.
Cable Operators Association earlier requested the Minister for Information and Broadcasting to provide due protection to their lives and property. Chairman PEMRA said cable operators already working will be given preference while issuing new licenses. (SANA)
