Vegetables prices have been increased by 20-30% in the markets of Hyderabad. The government hasn’t changed the prices of petroleum products, but still profiteers in Hyderabad are selling vegetables at 20-30% higher prices than the previous.
Due to this illegal increase in prices, thousands of citizens who offer Nazar-o-Niyaz in the holy month of Muharram are paying extra money to these profiteers. The vegetables sellers are demanding unfair prices due to the irresponsibility of Price Control Committee including the management.
The change in prices is noticed not only in one market but in most of the markets of Hyderabad.
In big markets of Hyderabad including: Lajpat Road, Latifabad No. 5, Latifabad No. 7, Latifabad No. 12, Tower Market, Main Qasimabad Road and other markets in different towns of city are selling vegetables on the following rates:
- Tomato – Rs. 100/Kg to Rs. 120/Kg
- Potato – Rs. 30/Kg
- Green Chili – Rs. 100/Kg to Rs. 130/kg
The 20-30% increase in prices is also noticed in Green Coriander, Mint and other vegetables.
Vegetable market traders told that, every year in the month of Muharram the increase in demand of vegetables, meat & other items causes the price hike.
According to whole sellers, daily demand of tomatoes is 6 thousand ton while in such occasions this demand increases by 30-40%.
Citizens of Hyderabad are demanding online grocery shopping as there is no such facility is available. The service of online vegetable shopping is currently available in big cities such as: Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore.
