According to World Bank report Pakistan is among top 5 countries where majority of the population is living in unsuitable conditions. Almost 80% population earns just $5.5 per day while the minimum wage per hour in developed countries such as USA is $7.25.
The population ratio with earning of just $5.5 was very high in countries like Nigeria & Pakistan while in developed countries like Norway and Germany it was insignificant. The top 5 countries with highest percentage of population earning just $5.5 are:
- Nigeria (92.1% population)
- India (86.8% population)
- Ethiopia (84.7% population)
- Bangladesh (84.5% population)
- Pakistan (79.5% population)
The countries with lowest percentage of low earnings were all European countries:
- Norway (0.2% population)
- France (0.2% population)
- Germany (0.3% population)
- Netherlands (0.5% population)
- UK (0.7% population)
Such reports indicate the wealth distribution around the world. Some countries are booming with economic development while others are on the brink of catastrophe.
According to world report 29.5% population of Pakistan is living in extreme poverty. According to World Bank the poverty headcount ratio is just $1.90 a day.
Though it has improved from previous years but it seems that long term policies are required to end poverty in Pakistan.
