Karachi: The pressure of crunch match yesterday against Sri Lanka got over the nerves of young Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal and he was fined 50 per cent of his match fee for not showing due respect to the umpires. This all happened during Pakistan’s World Twenty20 semi-final defeat against Sri Lanka on Thursday.
While commenting on the issue, the International Cricket Council said in a statement that Akmal disregarded the requests of both on field umpires and carried on to change his batting gloves during the 17th over of Pakistan’s innings.
The Match referee Jeff Crowe expressed that Akmal showed “blatant disregard” to both Australian umpires Rod Tucker and Simon Taufel (featuring in his last ICC tournament as on field umpire) which was “offensive and unacceptable from an international cricketer.”
