Karachi: The Society for the Rehabilitation of Special Children (SRSC), held a sports event at its school in collaboration with Special Olympics Pakistan. 8 other schools of special children participated in this event. The participating schools were: ACELP, Aga Khan, Aziz Begum, Dar-ul-Sukoon, The Effort, KVTC, Scinosa, SRSC and Zainab.
Despite the ASWJ rally in the neighbourhood, participating children from all schools attended in large numbers. The Event began with a Tilawat-e-Quran by a student, followed by the national anthem and march past by all participating children. Races held included 25 metres, 50 metres and relay races for both boys and girls.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Talat Hashimi, President SRSC said: “It was Begum Suraiya Qarni’s vision to create a Sports Complex for all the special children of Karachi to visit, interact in and learn from. We are very happy to welcome children from 8 other schools today. The Centre for Special Children is a happy place for children and parents, who like to come, avail these facilities, enjoy a light hearted atmosphere, learn new skills and leave the place as better and more positive individuals.”
SRSC’s mission is to re-introduce the once forgotten yet, special child back into our society through the process of physiotherapy, clinical and rehabilitation services, including speedy immunization, nutrition, and the imparting of basic social skills. Established in 1955 by Begum Akhtar Suleman, the institution grew under the presidency of Begum Suraiya Qarni who established SRSC at its current premises near Quaid-e-Azam’s Mazar in 1988. Mrs. Qarni joined SRSC in 1968 and served as President from 1986 to 2006.
SRSC also runs a free dispensary with qualified doctors and a literacy programme for our special children. No charge is made for any of these special services or for transporting children from different parts of the city to SRSC.
