Vehicle registration system is also getting digitized by the Excise and Taxation Department of the Islamabad administration, which means that the traditional registration book will now be replaced by Smart Cards. These Smart Cards will have all the information related to a specific vehicle, for instance its registration number, owner’s credentials and security features. Tempering will become impossible, once these Smart Cards have been reinstated. The fake vehicle registration papers and number plates will be identified immediately.
A database of about 700,000 vehicles has been prepared for the launch of the Smart cards. The department will give it a trial period of two months before implanting it completely. The recent terror attacks stimulated the launch of this system, which was in the pipeline since ages. Deputy Commissioner Mujahid Shardil, director general excise and director excise and taxation Noman Yousuf, thought it was about time. the law enforcement agencies need to track the vehicles used in criminal activities.[junkie-alert style=”white”] Smart Cards, if successfully implemented will become a vital tool for the law enforcement agencies in tracking criminal activity[/junkie-alert]
The work had been initiated after a formal agreement between NADRA and the Excise and Taxation Department. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa law enforcement agencies got wind of such a though and wrote formally for help asking for registration books with security features. Hence, it was felt that there was no harm in going forward with the idea. The Excise and Taxation Department lacks an online, integrated, secured and verified database, which is imperative for this purpose. This is where, NADRA will have to step in and provide support through its human resource in the area of IT and database.
This matter will be discussed in a meeting that is expected in Islamabad between the KP Excise and Taxation Department.
