Abdur Rehman Malik was born on 12 December 1951 in Sialkot. He completed BSc and MSc in statistics from the Karachi University in 1973. He started his career with the National Alien Registration Authority (NARA) as an immigration agent.
Later he joined the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) as a special agent and rose to the position of Director General. He played an important role against the war on terrorism including the arrest and extradition of Yousaf Ramzi who was a suspect in the world trade center bombings.
He was removed from service on suspicion of corruption after which he moved to UK. There he formed close ties with the PPP leadership and became Benazir Bhutto’s chief of security in 2007. He became an important member of the party and was offered the position of Interior minister during their rule from 2008 to 2013.
