VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis ha named Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas “an angel of peace” after signing an agreement. It is pertinent to mention here that Vatican officially recognized Palestine as a new state despite Israel’s opposition. A communiqué issued form Vatican said that a twenty-minute-long meeting was held between Mahmoud Abbas and Pope Francis.
Both the leaders talked about Israeli Peace Process and expressed hope that direct talks between both Israel and Palestine for removing tension were essential. It was wished in the meeting that by the support of the international community, brave decisions could be made to promote Israel-Palestine peace process.
Both the leaders discussed about the issues being faced by the Middle East as well as emphasizing to fight against terrorism. Pope Francis on the occasion presented a medal to Mahmoud Abbas on which the words “Destroy the Evil Spirits of War” were written. Pope told Mahmoud Abbas that he thought he was an angel of peace.
It is pertinent to mention here that Vatican has signed an agreement concerning recognizing Palestine as new state officially. It is said in the agreement about Catholic Church in Palestinian region that “Holy See” has recognized Palestine State on diplomatic level instead of Palestine Liberation Organization.
