There are many rumors about political upheaval in Pakistan like the Egypt and Tunis but I hope and pray that no ‘revolution’ takes place in Pakistan like in Tunisia or Egypt. First, Pakistan is a functioning democracy unlike Tunisia and Egypt or for that matter most other Muslim countries, including Saudi Arabia. Despite all the warts and whistles, and the power to change, the rulers are in the hands of Pakistanis through the ballot. Second, any revolution at this stage will completely destabilize Pakistan and spin it out of control, giving a chance once again to the army or power to the mullahs, which will be the worst thing to happen. With either of them in power, there is nowhere else for the country to go but spiral downwards into disaster. In such a case, the ‘failed state’ theory will become the truth and Pakistan will be broken up once again. Whatever may be the opinion of others, I, for one, would like to see Pakistan as a united, progressive, secular and liberal state prospering and living in peaceful coexistence with its neighbors.
