The world’s oldest university which is still educating students is the Al Karaouin University which is situated in Fez, a city of Morocco known as ‘Athens Of Africa’ and ‘Mecca of West’ because of importance in history and Islamic heritage.
The University was established in 859 with an adjacent mosque and is the oldest university according to UNESCO and Guinness World Record, the oldest university in Christian Europe was established in 1088, more than 200 years after the first university in Muslim world. The university also has the oldest library in the world with 4,000 manuscripts.
This university was constructed by a pious and wealthy Muslim woman Fatima al-Firhri. While in Europe the first women who was allowed to get admission in university was in 1608. Which means muslim women were running universities 800 years before European women were given right to get admission in university.
