Karachi: Pakistani journalist and political commentator Marvi Sirmed came under attack here Friday night but managed to runaway safely along with
her husband in a black car in which they were traveling. They were shot twice by unknown armed men from a car standing in front with tinted glasses, local media reported.
Sirmed has already received many death threats from unknown elements for her vocal critics against Islamists and in support of secularism in Pakistan. Zaid Hamid is considered as her major opponent.
Sirmed’s vehicle came under target at Murree Road near Bani Gala on the outskirts of Islamabad while she was returning home from work this evening along with his husband, Manzoor Sirmed
“They tried to target us twice and fired several shots at my car which missed. Luckily, my driver sped away and we escaped,” Sirmed told media.
She said that they rushed to the nearest police checkpost and explained what had happened to them, but as they returned to the crime scene, the attackers had fled. Marvi said that she did not know who could have attacked her.
Meanwhile, many of her sympathizers and colleagues have condemned the attack on Marvi and have called for independent inquiry. Rehman Malik has ordered the authorities to submit a detailed report about the assault and also ordered extra security to be deputed at her residence.
