In keeping with their policy of economic growth the government recently announced the construction of several new road projects linking important cities. Among these the proposed Karachi-Lahore Motorway is the most anticipated.
The Karachi-Lahore motorway would stretch a distance of 1160 km and connecting 50 cities along its routes and further more through link roads. The project was confirmed after an MoU was signed with a Chinese company CSCEC last year which included a number of other developmental projects.
The development will take place under the supervision of National Highway Authority which stated that the feasibility report for the project had been approved by the Central Development Working Party. Work on the Motorway is expected to begin this year once the routes are finalized.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had earlier stressed the priority to complete the project within 2.5 years. The construction of the Motorway would facilitate travelling and trade between the cities and prove a stimulant for economic growth and creation of jobs. Industrial estates and new settlements could also be constructed along its route which would help the economy.
The project was criticized by some people who argued that railways should be the top most priority for trade, being much cheaper but nobody can deny that if the motorway is completed it would be a blessing for the people.
