Karachi University (KU) has increased semester fees by 20% for all departments & faculties in both morning & evening shifts. The decision was made public in a meeting chaired by the Vice Chancellor Muhammad Ajmal Khan.
The decision of increasing the fees was taken because of the financial problems of the university, said Muhammad Ajmal Khan. The decision of increased is also applicable for self financed seats.
The management also decided to increase the number of seats in different departments for admissions in 2018, this decision was made to receive greater grants from government.
Increase in Fees:
The fees of different faculties have been increased to Rs. 10,200 from Rs. 8,500. This increase was for faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Arabic, Bengali, Persian, Sindhi, Urdu, Philosophy, English, International Relations, Islamic History, Mass Communication, Pakistan Studies, political studies, Public Policy & Faculty of Education.
Other faculties also saw an increase such as:
- Bachelors of Chemical Engineering: Previous fees Rs. 25,500 which is now increased to Rs. 30,600
- Department of Visual Studies: Saw an increase of 6,400 after fees was increased from Rs. 32,000 Rs. 38,400
- School Of Law: Increase of Rs. 6,100 making the fees Rs. 36,600 Rs. 30,500.
- Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences: Fees was increased for both morning & evening shifts. Morning fees was increased from Rs. 22,500 to Rs. 27,000 for evening it was increased from Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 54,000.
- Faculty of Management & administrative Sciences: An increase of 4,300 (from Rs. 36,500 to Rs. 43,800)
- B.Com: The fees for Bachelors in Commerce was also increased from Rs. 15,500 to Rs. 18,600.
- Department of Public Administration: Previous fees of Rs. 20,000 was increased by Rs. 4000 and now students are obliged to pay Rs. 24,000.
Other faculties and departments also saw the 20% increase which is something unpopular among students. Previously on many occasions the administration increased the fees but saw opposition and protests after which they were forced to reduce the increased fees.
Sindh government also approved a grant of Rs. Rs. 502.1 for the water & sewerage system of Karachi University. President Mahmood Hussain also gave fund of Rs. 10 million for establishment of a medical college and hospital in the University.
