Karachi: The Higher Education Commission has decided to make 7 universities in the country into Smart universities of which Karachi University is one. The Smart University plan seeks to incorporate 24 hour free Wi-Fi facilities for students on campus. The wi-fi facilities will be provided by PTCL for which an agreement is in place.
The Karachi university free wifi will help students stay connected all the time through their laptops, smartphones and tablets and carry out their research or assignments and be able to submit them on time through the internet. The chairman of the HEC Dr Mukhtar revealed that for the time being, only one university of each province was being turned into a Smart University and the program would be later expanded to include all government universities.
The universities that will be turned to Smart universities include :
- Karachi University
- Punjab University
- Peshawar University
- Balochistan University
- Quaid-e-Azam University
- Azad Kashmir University
- Gilgit University
PTCL will be responsible for providing internet facilities for the smart universities and all expenses will be borne by the HEC. An agreement is being finalized in this regard with PTCL which will include the installation of wi-fi towers in these universities to make sure an uninterrupted 24 hour free wifi availability.
