K-Electric’s distribution is among the largest electricity distribution networks in the world. It uses a network of power lines, substations and pole mounted transformers to supply the power to its consumers. The areas are distributed into four regions, which are further divided into 28 distribution centres, thus making the distribution of power efficient. K-Electric is moving ahead by introducing smart grid.
The smart grid will make K-electric as commercially viable for the consumers and it will give the best class services to its consumers. In addition, it will allow the reduction of the aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses through the improvement of energy monitoring and through installing a proper distribution network management system that will further enhance the operations and reduce the network outage response time. Remotely managed smart meters will be installed in the first stage of the operation, while the transformers will be backed up by the IT systems to manage the information. This will allow reducing energy losses and increasing the productivity and the network services. The K-electric will also install Aerial Bundled Cabling (ABC) to further aid reduce energy losses in areas with illegal electricity usage. The ABC is being installed on High Loss Transformers to control theft. It has moved forward with its step after the success of the pilot project. Around 47 Pole Mounted Transformers (PMTs) in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Garden and North Nazimabad have been installed.
