Hiro Onodo was part of Japanese Army unit which was sent to an island of Philippines in 1944. His mission was to spy on the USA base.
They were isolated in the island and were unaware than Japan has surrendered and lost the war. The battle in the island continued and most of the soldier surrendered by Lieutenant Hiro and some other soldiers dismissed the messages that the war is over. He didn’t believed that the world war was over and though that they are fooling him.
One after one all soldiers died in the jungle except Hiro who survived by living on food stolen from farmers or by gathering consumable foods from jungle.
He came out of jungle in 1974 after his former commanding officer came and convinced him to come out of jungle and told him that he is released from his military duties.
For 29 years after end of the war he lived as a patriotic soldier denying to humiliate his country by surrender. He died in Tokyo at the age of 91.
