Disqualification case against Jahangir Tareen is causing a debate in Supreme Court about dishonesty and the grounds on which any parliamentarian can be disqualified.
PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi filed a case against PTI leader Jahangir Tareen alleging that he acquired illegal money through insider trading.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar questioned that whether violation of law amounts to dishonesty? He also asked how can violation of every law be grounds for disqualification.
He further said ‘”We accept that laws were violated, that mistakes were made, but where did dishonesty come [in to this argument] from?”
Justice Bandial raised questions whether Jahangir Tareen committed any crime? To this Hanif Abbasi’s lawyer responded that insider trading is prohibited in law and it’s a crime to do so.
Petitioner also claimed that Jahangir Tareen provided incomplete & incorrect information during election nomination but Chief Justice responded that the income from contracted land was not declared because there was no columns in the form for it.
