Is the UK institutionally racist? A US pop star says she was racially abused on flying in to London and no one intervened as she was called a slave; we saw some appalling scenes/reaction to the Dale Farm travellers; the police stop and search a dispproportionately high number number of ethnic minority groups.
UK is just as institutionally racist as it were 20/30 yrs ago! Its just a more ‘tolerant’ country – hate the term tolerant. Its true what they say , an employer makes a decision within the first 30 secs they see you (which has happened to me in many jobs I have gone for in the city!) And why is it necessary to fill in equal opportunity forms when companies dont use this info fairly anyway?
There was a guardian article not to long ago that said that in porportion there are more black people in prison here in the UK then in America, think thats enough proof to suggest britain is institutionally racist.
The very fact that parties like the BNP are allowed to exist proves this. If muslims formed a similar party, they would immediately be branded as extremists and would probably be banned. The detention laws for suspected terrorist are also absurd. No other faith group has to go through this. And as for races (as opposed to religion), they are clearly discriminated against in every day situations- try pitching a black person against a white person to an employer. It’s no contest.
Capitalism is institutionally racist. Racism is merely the result of the struggle for jobs and homes. There is no need for any struggle. We have the technology to feed and house far more people than now exist, but cannot because we are temporarily stuck between having the tools for the job and knowing how to use them. We are still running our social car with a steam engines, in effect.
