Anti Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) has arrested two members of Khokhar family who along with their 12 other relatives have stolen more than 2000 motorbikes in Karachi.
Sabir Khokhar & Muhammad Ashraf Khokhar are members of Khokhar Group which have been involved in lifting motorcycles from the metropolitan city in the past several years.
According to the ACLC police officer the Khokhar family originally belonged from Jhelum, Punjab. Some elders of the family settled in different parts of the city.
Initially they were involved in car theft but after their arrest & subsequent bail in 2009 they switched from automobile to motorbikes.
There were multiple reasons to switch from car vehicles to motorbikes:
- Weak security features of bike (lock, key, etc)
- Car owners had trackers while motorcycle owners avoided installing tracker
- Acquittals & easy bailouts in motorcycle theft.
He further explained that initially only few elders of the family were involved but later the children also joined them. The whole gang was compromised of 25-30 members who had links with criminals in Khuzdar, the city where they smuggled the stolen motorcycles.
The preferred Balochistan because it was easier to smuggle the bikes and they already had links in Khuzdar. According to police they also used women to smuggle bikes.
