Jan Karbaat, the head of a Dutch fertility clinic is facing court cases after his death because many children who were born from donated sperm from the IVF believe that he used his own sperms for their birth.
According to the law sperm from a donor can only be used to give birth to 6 children, but it is believed that Jan Karbaat used his own sperms in more than 60 cases.
It is said that he falsified data, destroyed sperms of other donor and instead used his own sperm. After allegations and irregularities he closed the clinic in 2009.
In 1980’s and early 1990’s he was considered the pioneer of in the field of fertilization and his Bijdorp Medical Centre was the largest sperm centre. During his life time many people demanded his DNA reports to get their children tested but he denied.
The case becomes highlighted after many children born through sperm donated from his clinic resembled him. One client Moniek Wassenaar said that in 2010 Jan Karbaat accepted that it was possible that he was his father.
If proven through DNA it he will hold the record of fathering biggest number of children without marriage.
