His father Damyanti Gupta was from Indian city of Rohtak while her mother Subhash was from Tharu Shah, Pakistan but migrated to India after 1947 partition. His parents worked as engineers for Ford and her mother was the first female who worked as an engineer in USA.

Sanjay Gupta completed his schooling from Novi High School and then graduated in biomedical sciences from University of Michigan. Later he completed his M.D degree from University of Michigan Medical School.
During his studies he also served as the president of Indian American Students Association (IASA). In 1997 he was also selected for fellowship in White House where he worked as an Advisor for Hillary Clinton.
