The once popular DHA Karachi Sunday Bazaar is no more! The authorities closed the bazaar stating that the facility had been set up on private property and their agreement with the market organizers had ended last year. Sources state that the organizers and the shopkeepers of the Sunday market setup at Phase VIII were fully aware of the contract’s conditions with the authority which also stated the end of the term by December, 31st 2014. The land allocated for the Bazaar belonged to different people.
The authorities warned them again and again about the expiry of the contract and had asked them to move their businesses. Some did comply with the requests, but most didn’t. The authorities also stated that the land belonged to different people and they didn’t have the authority to accommodate these people elsewhere. The DHA authorities are planning to develop this area, as is the rest of the phase VIII.
The organizers of the DHA bazaar were not complaining about the move but accepted the reasons of the DHA authorities. Now they are looking for alternatives to set up the Bazaar elsewhere. Riffat Ali of the welfare association of Field Organizers of Weekly Bazaars in Karachi stated that the Sunday Bazaar was a well established and a household name, but that didn’t give them the authority to disregard the law. Alternate spaces are under consideration, which will also have to be approved by the authorities.
