Dilip Kumar is a famous Indian actor who was born as Yusuf Khan into a Hindko speaking Pathan family on 11th December 1922. He was born in Peshawar at Qissa Khawani Bazaar area. This region is now known as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan. His father was Lala Ghulam Sarwar, who was a fruit merchants and owned orchards in Peshawar. In 1930s, his family shifted to Mumbai and in 1940, Dilip Kumar went to Pune.
Dilip was initially a canteen owner and a dry fruit supplier when he was spotted by actress Devika Rani in 1943 and was instantly offered a lead role in her movie Jwar Bhata. She was the owner of the production house ‘Bombay Talkies’. The movie was released in 1944 and was the start of his movie career. Hindi author Bhaqwati Charan Varma gave him the screen name Dilip Kumar. He could speak a number of languages English, Hindi, Urdu, Hindko and Pashto.
Dilip Kumar’s first film, Jwar Bhata (1944) went unnoticed, it was Jugnu (1947) in which he starred alongside Noor Jehan that became his first major hit at the box office.
