Islamabad: The daughter of former President Iran Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was taken to prison in Iran on Saturday accused of plotting a conspiracy against the current Iranian regime, Iranian state media reported. According to the report, she has to serve six-month sentence in jail for “spreading anti-state propaganda.”
A former member of parliament, Faezeh Rafsanjani, was convicted in January and sentenced to jail. The conviction of former President’s daughter is believed to be over an interview she gave to an opposition news site where she criticised economic policy and human rights violations in Iran.
She was arrested briefly in 2009 after street protests against the election that retained President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power. Protesters said it was rigged in favour of the incumbent and she addressed the protests.
